Dr Chris Graves
Specialist Anaesthetist & Intensive Care Specialist
MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, University of Queensland)
FANZCA (Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists)
FCICM (Fellow of the College of Intensive Care Medicine)
Dr Chris Graves graduated from the University of Queensland before undertaking specialist training in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Mater Hospital and the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, which are major high-volume tertiary referral centres managing the full spectrum of critical and complex cases. He extended his experience in cardio-thoracic medicine at the Prince Charles Hospital and internationally in Seattle, USA, gaining exposure to high acuity surgical and critical care practice at a standard that ranks among the best in the world. That combination of local and international clinical experience underpins an approach to patient care that is both evidence-based and broadly informed.
Chris holds the uncommon dual specialty qualifications of Anaesthetist and Intensivist — a combination that allows a complete picture of the entire surgical journey, from pre-operative assessment through to post-operative recovery and, where needed, critical care and life support. He has worked across a wide range of clinical settings in Australia and internationally and has provided anaesthesia and critical care relief in under-resourced environments within Oceania and southern Asia.
Chris has an interest in peri-operative medicine and the anaesthetic management of major surgery — including patients with serious or complex medical conditions for whom careful, individualised planning is essential. He has experience in multi-organ support, and this brings a depth of physiological understanding directly into his pre-operative assessment and intra-operative decision-making. He also has a strong interest in pain management and short stay and day surgery. Chris will always discuss the clinical pathway fully with you on the day of surgery and is always happy to fully answer any questions you may have before the procedure commences.
Outside medicine, Chris is a committed endurance athlete on land and water — pursuits that have in common with clinical practice: careful preparation, consistent focus, and reliable decision-making at every step. A Sunshine Coast local for over 25 years, he and his family are actively engaged in the region's broader social and environmental causes while remaining committed to its healthcare needs.
