Dr Huw John

MbChB (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, University of Otago, New Zealand, 2014)

FANZCA (Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, 2022)

Dr Hugh John originates from Christchurch, New Zealand and completed his medical degree at the University of Otago before beginning anaesthetic training in Auckland. He later moved to Melbourne to complete the final three years of specialist training as part of the Northwestern Anaesthesia Training Scheme. He completed fellowship posts at Austin Health and later at Sunshine Coast University Hospital in 2022 before gaining admission as a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA).

Since 2023 Huw has been practising on the Sunshine Coast with Sunshine Coast Anaesthesia Group and is credentialled across all the region’s private hospitals. His practice encompasses a broad range of surgical specialties in both public and private settings. In addition to theatre work, Dr John previously worked with the Royal Flying Doctor Service, providing Aeromedical Retrieval and Remote Medicine Support between 2023 and 2025. He also undertakes occasional event and expedition medicine, supporting festivals, sporting events and remote expeditions, as well as participating in international retrieval and teaching opportunities when available.

Huw's clinical interests include Orthopaedic Anaesthesia, Regional Anaesthesia techniques and Ultrasound-guided nerve blocks, Paediatric Anaesthesia, and Head and Neck surgery. He also has an interest in international medicine and teaching, particularly the delivery of high-quality medical care in remote or resource-limited environments, having undertaken international teaching trips to Africa, Mongolia and the Pacific Islands since completing anaesthetic training. This interest complements his broader anaesthetic practice and reflects a focus on adaptability, teamwork and patient safety across a wide variety of clinical settings.

Outside of medicine, Huw enjoys an active outdoor lifestyle. He regularly competes in triathlons and spends much of his spare time camping, hiking, cycling and exploring the outdoors with friends. He enjoys climbing mountains and has recently taken up sailing, while occasionally attempting to improve his surfing skills with limited success. Music is another long-standing interest, and he plays several instruments including guitar, piano and drums. These interests provide balance outside of clinical work and reflect Huw’s enthusiasm for exploration, creativity and lifelong learning.
