Dr Matthews is a Specialist Anaesthetist practicing on the Sunshine Coast.  He completed his early medical training in Cairns before undertaking specialist anaesthesia training across several major hospitals throughout South-East Queensland. This diverse training experience provided broad exposure to a wide range of surgical specialties and patient populations, helping to shape his comprehensive and patient-centred approach to anaesthetic care.

Dr Matthews currently works in both the public and private sectors on the Sunshine Coast, including as a Specialist Anaesthetist at Sunshine Coast University Hospital. In addition to his clinical work, Dr Matthews is actively involved in teaching and mentoring the next generation of anaesthetists. He serves as a Supervisor of Training for registrars and contributes to maintaining high clinical standards through his role as a member of the hospital’s Quality and Safety team.

Dr Matthews’ areas of interest include Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He is committed to delivering safe, evidence-based anaesthetic care while ensuring patients feel informed, comfortable, and supported throughout their surgical journey.

Outside of medicine, Dr Matthews enjoys spending time with his young family and making the most of the Sunshine Coast lifestyle. He is passionate about surfing and outdoor activities and enjoys keeping up with a range of sports and travelling.
