Dr Stephen Mitchell is a Specialist Anaesthetist based on the Sunshine Coast with more than twenty years of clinical experience.
Stephen grew up in Toowoomba and studied Medicine at the University of Queensland as a Rural Scholarship holder. After completing his internship on the Sunshine Coast, he spent several years working in regional, rural and remote areas of Queensland. He initially trained in Emergency Medicine and Aeromedical Retrieval before undertaking specialist training in Anaesthesia.
Dr Mitchell’s anaesthetic training was undertaken on the Sunshine Coast, in Cairns, and in Hobart where he completed his Fellowship. During his registrar years he assisted in the delivery of the Remote Situations, Difficult Circumstances & Developing Country Anaesthetic Courses and Australian Defence Force Military Anaesthetic Courses. He also presented at state and national conferences and participated in research in airway management and awareness under anaesthesia.
Stephen has worked as an Anaesthetist on the Sunshine Coast for more than two decades, initially in the public system and subsequently in private practice. During that time, he has also undertaken multiple overseas aid trips to East Timor and the Philippines. He has served as an Executive member of the Sunshine Coast Anaesthetic Group (SCAG) for approximately fifteen years.
His professional interests include medical education, clinical governance, mentoring, and supporting the welfare and sustainability of anaesthetists.
Outside medicine Stephen enjoys bushwalking, gardening, swimming, photography and reading.
