What is sedation?

Sedation is a very common form of anaesthetic. Sedation is often used for such procedures as colonoscopies, removal of skin lesions, or cataract surgery. The main role of the anaesthetist in these procedures is to ensure that you are comfortable and have minimal memory of the event. Occasionally you can have some recollection of the procedure, or you are aware of your surroundings, but with the aid of the medication administered, you will be comfortable and relaxed. At times this notion is very daunting for patients, but rest assured, anaesthetists are experts in medicated relaxation!
