Fasting for Children

Fasting for Children

Fasting is essential for all anaesthetics. The main aim is to ensure that their stomach is empty. If stomach contents escape into the airway and enter the lungs, severe lung damage can occur. That is why fasting is so important.

Your child needs to fast from all food (including lollies and chewing gum) and milk drinks at least 6 hours prior to their operation. Clear fluids (water, clear juices without pulp eg apple juice, blackcurrant juice) may be given to your child (in moderation) up to 2 hours before their operation.

Any regular prescribed medication should be given regardless of fasting with a little water.
